Monday, 20 November 2017 - Flew to Bhuj in Gujarat to photograph remote villages, starting with Mithdi village where the colorful mosque and local Malik Jat women posed patiently for photos. Learned the tribe's history-originally herders from Iran who migrated 500 years ago-and saw their distinctive gold nose rings supported by hairpieces. Captured portraits of women and children in traditional attire, including a favorite photo of a little girl standing in a doorway.

The next day we flew to Bruj in the state of Gujarat to photograph people in remote villages.

While we were in the village this group of Malik Jat women agreed to be photographed.

Originally the Jats were herders who lived in an area called Half in Iran. Five hundred years ago these shepherds migrated from Half and came to Sindh and Kutch to search for new grazing lands. They crossed the Rann of Kutch and settled there, taking up farming.

This particular tribe maintains their wealth by wearing gold rings through their nose. These rings are so heavy they use their hair to help support the ring.

This little girl did not want to be photographed. She hid behind her mother's dress. While we were busy photographing other women, I noticed she was standing in the doorway of a nearby home. I turned and took this picture - one of my favorites.
