Nature in Yellowstone and Tetons

Monday, 21 September 2009 - Captured sunrise reflections of the Grand Tetons from the Snake River overlook and Schwabacher's Landing, photographed the iconic Church of the Transfiguration with mountain backdrops, enjoyed time wandering Jackson Hole and its elk-horn arches, visited the National Museum of Wildlife Art with inspiring animal works, rode trails near Leigh Lake with a horseback outing from Jenny Lake Lodge, spotted elk on Moose Junction-Wilson Road, and capped the day with moose sightings before a great dinner back at the lodge.

From the Snake River turnout Cal went back to the Schwabacher's Landing to catch the mountains in the morning light. There were easily over 40 photographers at the site.

The water was calm and the reflections beautiful.

Cal stopped by the Church Of The Transfiguration while the sun was still low in the east. The view behind the alter is spectacular.

After breakfast we went into Jackson Hole to walk around. In the main square are arches made of Elk horns.

From Jackson Hole we went to the National Museum of Wildlife Art just outside the city. It was fantastic - highly recommended - wonderful art and photos of animals.

Back to the Jenny Lake Lodge for another trail ride. This time Cal is riding Calvin. Yes, the horse is named the same as its rider.

Cal having trouble telling Calvin to turn right. While the horse rides were a lot of fun, understanding the horse is hard work. Calvin was a little hard to handle - wanted to do his own thing.

The Moulton barn on Mormon's Row. This is a well-photographed barn. I would love to spend several days in the Mormon's Row area as there are several old structures built between 1908 and 1950.

On the Moose Junction - Wilson Road, we caught a glimpse an Elk caught on a hillside. This was the only animal Virginia Ann and Cal spotted without the help of others.

Near the Elk was a female - we were able to get much closer to her.

As we headed back to our last evening in Grand Teton National Park we spotted a Moose. Once again we used others to lead us to the sighting where a photographer was taking photos in an odd direction. The Moose was on a hill and it was getting dark and tough to see. Only with a long lens could you see him.

Seeing the moose was great as we had scoured the park looking for one but to see him on the last night was especially fun. Then back to the Jenny Lake Lodge for a great meal.
