Nature in Yellowstone and Tetons

Saturday, 19 September 2009 - Woke early for sunrise photos atop Signal Mountain with sweeping views of the Grand Teton peaks, enjoyed a horseback ride from Jenny Lake Lodge along scenic trails with the Cathedral Group towering overhead, rented a motorboat on Jackson Lake for a peaceful picnic lunch and photos of Mt. Moran and Oxbow Bend, and capped the day with elk sightings near Schwabacher's Landing and quiet sunset light on the mountains.

Once again up early to make it to the top of Signal Mountain for sunrise.

There was some burning going on by the Park Service east of the park. This morning the smoke hung over the Jackson Hole valley.

This horseback ride was pretty tame from the Jenny Lake Lodge over to Jenny Lake and back - about 2 hours.

After the horseback ride we went to the Colter Bay Marina and rented a small motorboat. We were not allowed to go out on Lake Jackson very far but were able to travel a long way along the shore.

This is Mt Moran across the lake while we are on the boat. A simply beautiful day - temperature in the 70s.

On Lake Jackson, Cal and Virginia Ann enjoyed a picnic lunch - purchased at Coulter Bay Grocery store. In Half Moon Bay we pulled over and enjoyed lunch on the water.

Virginia Ann loved the boat trip - she piloted the boat for most of our Jackson Lake trip. She wished we had some fishing gear as the water was so clear and beautiful.

Virginia Ann captured Mt Moran from the Oxbow Bend Scenic Overlook on highway US 89. The leaves were just turning with the Aspen leading the way. It was a cloudy stormy day.

From Oxbow Lake we traveled to another beautiful location - Schwabacher's Landing. It was overcast so the beautiful blue sky was hard to capture. We promised to return.

As we traveled on a trail back to the car from Schwabacher's Landing a small squirrel stepped on to the path. His mouth is full of dried grass. Virginia Ann was quick enough to take a quick shot of the wildlife. He quickly disappeared into the brush.

Next stop was the Church Of The Transfiguration. It is unique in that the window behind the altar is a wonderful view of the Grand Tetons.

As the sun set we (and several others) spotted a herd of Elk on the edge of the forest. While the light was poor, we were able to get some shots with a tripod and long lens.
