Motorcycle Trip Across USA

Friday-Monday, 22-25 June 1979 - Rode east on Interstate 40 from New Mexico into Texas stopped for a third speeding citation but talked our way out of it, then continued through Oklahoma to Norman to visit a West Point classmate. Pushed on toward Arkansas stopping to camp about halfway to New Orleans and finally checked into a hotel in New Orleans near the city center , coping with long lines for gasoline as we prepared to explore the Big Easy.

Staying on Interstate 40 we rode our bikes east into Texas.

At some point this day we were stopped for speeding for the third time but were able to talk our way out of a ticket. Leaned hard on the soldier/patriotism angle.

Into Oklahoma and our destination of Norman, OK. In Norman was the home of a cadet in the class of '80 in Cal's company - Brynnen Sheets. Brynnen would go on to marry one of our classmates, Bob Hahn.

Our next destination was a campground in Arkansas about halfway to New Orleans.

In New Orleans we checked into a hotel near the center of town.

John remembers waking up in our New Orleans hotel, looking out the window at a line forming for gasoline, dressing and getting in line to fill our tanks. We dealt with some rationing during our trip, but generally motorcycles were exempt because of the small tanks.
