Thursday, 9 February 2023 - Drove from Hue to Hoi An with a stop at Lap An Lagoon, passed through Da Nang and had lunch south of the city, arrived in Hoi An in the late afternoon, checked into the hotel, then went on a walking tour of the town including narrow alleys, street markets, the Japanese Bridge (Chùa Cau), lantern-lit streets along the Thu Bon River, and sampled local street food at Bánh Mì Phuong while observing Year of the Cat displays.

southeastasia2023 — A unique feature of Hội An architecture are the placing of two "eyes" over the front door.

These eyes are often carved with the eight trigrams; or eight-petal flower with Heaven-and-Earth circle.

southeastasia2023 — We wandered along the streets which were wide - in general - but this little ally was very narrow.

southeastasia2023 — Chùa Cầu is a bridge with a temple on top. In the 16th century the Japanese enclave built a bridge linking them to the Chinese enclave. The bridge is known today as the Japanese Bridge.

southeastasia2023 — A street vendor selling "Cloudy Ice Cream" we did not try any.

southeastasia2023 — However, we did try the street fare at Bánh Mì Phượng. As it's name implies they sell Vietnam's most popular street food - the bánh mì. A baguette filled with various fillings typically pate. We skipped the pate and had pork and then one with a local fish. They were delicious.

Part of the allure of Bánh Mì Phượng is that Anthony Bourdain ate there and said the sandwich was the best he had ever had.
