Monday, 31 October 2022 - Started in Chefchaouen with more blue city photography, then after breakfast began the long drive to Fez with a lunch stop at a street-side BBQ joint sampling grilled meats, continued through scenic countryside past the Sidi Chahed dam reservoir, and arrived in Fez in the afternoon to begin sightseeing including the Royal Palace gates and Medina views.

Cal went out before breakfast for another quick walk before the tourists were up and out.

morocco2022 — After breakfast we began the journey to Fez - 5 - 6 hours. For lunch the guide suggested a BBQ street side "restaurant".

Cal stands next to the sides of beef in the BBQ place. You walk up and let the owner know which part of the cow you would like. He then cuts from the carcass and grinds the meat into sausage - mixing with various herbs.

morocco2022 — We made it to Fez and began some sightseeing after checking into our Riad (hotel).

The first stop was the Dar al-Makhzen or Royal Palace

morocco2022 — These ornate gates were constructed in 1971. The gates are considered an excellent piece of modern Moroccan craftsmanship and are lavishly decorated with elaborate mosaic tile, carved cedar wood, and doors of gilt bronze covered in geometric patterns.

The Royal Palaces are closed to the public so this as close you can get to palace grounds.

morocco2022 — Near the Royal Palace is the Jewish Quarter. No Jews live there today.

You can see the large balconies which are a hallmark of the Jewish Quarter.

morocco2022 — We drove to the hills looking over Fez - the Medina is in a valley between hills.

This is the Medina - the Great Mosque is the bright building in green.

morocco2022 — On the hill overlooking the city are the ruins of the Marinid Tombs.

These ruins are attributed to the 14th century, during the Marinid dynasty (13th-15th centuries).
