My first bike was actually a Honda 360 on/off road bike (really more on than
off). My dad thought it would be too small for cross country travel, so he
helped me buy a Honda CB750F Super Sport, Renee. This went to Germany with me.
Cal and my dad, dressed for the road in New York, outside West Point -
motorcycles were banned on campus, so we stored them off campus and snuck out
to ride (couldn't wear jeans either).
The day after graduating from West Point Cal and roommate, John Lee, gathered with their families at a diner
for breakfast prior to the great motorcycle ride. The motorcycles were packed with camping
gear and motorcycle supplies. Strong motorcycles at the time - good enough for the trip.
After graduation, roommate John Lee and I rode
New York to Seattle to San Diego and back to Ft
Benning, GA,
taking a picture of each state welcome sign as we crossed the country. The
trip is documented in
Trip Across the USA.
The bikes used to
cross the US.
John Lee's is on the left, Cal's on the right. He rode a Yamaha 750 with a
shaft drive - very high-tech at the time.
