Abstract Art in Moab Utah

Friday, 9 April 2021 - Covered a lot of miles today - first stopped at Newspaper Rock State Historic Monument photographing hundreds of ancient petroglyphs, then continued into southern Canyonlands National Park exploring extreme canyon viewpoints and abstract rock and tree patterns in the bright midday sun before the long drive back to the hotel and a night shoot under the stars.

moab2021 — Newspaper Rock State Historic Monument is a Utah state monument featuring a rock panel carved with one of the largest known collections of petroglyphs.

moab2021 — The first carvings at the Newspaper Rock site were made around 2,000 years ago, left by people from the Archaic, Anasazi, Fremont, Navajo, Anglo, and Pueblo cultures.

In Navajo, the rock is called "Tse' Hone'" which translates to a rock that tells a story.

moab2021 — The petroglyphs were carved by Native Americans during both the prehistoric and historic periods. There are over 650 rock art designs. The drawings on the rock are of different animals, human figures, and symbols.

moab2021 — I liked the pictures of riders and the animals. A story of someone proud to be successful in a hunt.

moab2021 — A rock with a very unusual pattern - part of an attempt to create pictures which are art worthy.

moab2021 — From Newspaper Rock the trees along Indian Creek look dead - there are no leaves. In black and white the patterns are great.

moab2021 — Another photograph - landscape - of the trees. Pretty lines.

moab2021 — Then we continued on to Canyonlands National Park - this is the extreme southern part on paved road. Interesting canyons and rocks.

Looks like a skull - my second one this trip - I am seeing things.

moab2021 — I tried several times to capture the old Juniper trees and the red rocks. Difficult in the height of the day and full sun.

moab2021 — This tree had very few leaves but beautiful lines.

A long - 2 hour - drive back to the hotel and dinner getting ready for a night shoot.

moab2021 — This is Double Arch in Arches National Park. Formed as a couple of potholes which wore through the rock the two arches are beautiful.

The arches are partially lit from a flashlight briefly shone on the rock. Not my idea but another of the 15 or so photographers gathered to capture the stars.

moab2021 — Double Arches without the light on the rock - just their silhouettes and millions of stars.

A fun night - so many stars.
