Photo Trip to Havasu Canyon

Tuedsay, 14 April 2015 - Hiked along the Havasu River before sunrise to catch early light on the water and canyon landscapes, wandered scenic riverbanks and red rock ledges with sparkling reflections, explored small waterfalls and broad river views, and photographed Mooney Falls from the top of its travertine walls against dramatic canyon backdrops.

In the early morning before sunrise, we hiked for a while along Havasu River looking for interesting spots to catch the early light. This would become our schedule - out prior to sunrise then back to camp for breakfast.

We walked along the river to a place where the river was wide with great rocks from the cliffs providing a backdrop.

Mooney Falls is the Havasu Canyon's highest falls at almost 200 feet. The wall of travertine goes from one side of the canyon to the other, making getting down to the falls very difficult. The fall's name comes from an accident - in 1880 a group of miners came to this point while prospecting. Unable to hike down they began lowering Daniel Mooney over the edge when the rope broke, and he dropped to his death.

Mooney Falls is a good hike from the campsite. It is challenging to get to the bottom, but there have been several projects to make a path from the top to the bottom. It is a complex series of tunnels and carved paths and finally a bit of a ladder.
