Birthday Celebration in Eastern Europe

Thursday, 22 September 2016 - Traveled by short train ride to picturesque Tübingen, strolled along the Neckar River admiring its historic homes and bridges, explored the charming market area and St. George's Collegiate Church, visited the serene Bebenhausen Monastery with its medieval cloisters and gardens, and ended the day with a relaxing park walk and dinner back in Stuttgart.

The day we had all been waiting for visiting the town where David had attended college - Tubingen. A short train ride out of Stuttgart so no time for a picnic.

In central Tubingen, the Neckar river divides briefly into two streams, forming the elongated Neckar Island, famous for its Platanenallee with high plane trees, some of which are more than 200-years old.

St. George's Collegiate Church alter.

St. George's Collegiate Church was one of the first to convert to Martin Luther's Protestant church. It maintains several "Roman Catholic" features, such as patron saints.

We traveled a short distance by bus outside Tubigen to the Bebenhausen Monastery.

Count Palatine Rudolph von Tubingen founded the Bebenhausen Monastery most likely in 1183. The former Cistercian monastery had its zenith from the 13th to the 15th century when it was one of the richest monasteries in Wurttemberg.

The minster (monastery church) includes landmarks such as the crossing tower built of stone, and the conclave (cells) where the monks lived.

The two massive fountains that grace the park in front of the New Palace in central Stuttgart are quite beautiful. They date back to 1863.
