North and South Coyote Buttes

Thursday, 22 February 2024 - Up early to photograph the Toadstool Hoodoos at sunrise, chased a fogbow along the way back to Kanab, then drove to the South Coyote Buttes for a challenging 4x4 drive and short hike exploring colorful sandstone formations, patterns, and unique shapes including the "Control Tower," "Witches Hat," and "Southern Wave," ending the day back in Kanab planning tomorrow's hike to the Wave.

arizona2024 — Pretty rock formation standing on its own in a valley which can be reached by a short hike.

arizona2024 — We were all lined up and waiting for the sun to peek over the rocks.

arizona2024 — An interesting yellow rock formation with a small red rock on top - amazing what nature created.

arizona2024 — As we headed back to Kanab we rode through some fog. At one point the sun created a "fogbow". We pulled over and piled out to take pictures. After our first shot we loaded up and moved down the road, stopping to try again. It was fun to chase the fogbow.

arizona2024 — After lunch, we drove to the Coyote Buttes - South trailhead. The road in was very sandy and long - a hard 4x4 wheel drive.

A short hike in revealed very colorful rock formations.

arizona2024 — The sandstone not only created the rock formations but ran along the ground.

arizona2024 — Patterns of sandstone crisscrossed the rocks. During the entire trip we kept marveling of the forces which could create the patterns in rock.

arizona2024 — The "Southern Wave" - a taste of the colors and swirls of the "Wave" which we will see tomorrow.

arizona2024 — This picture is not very good - but I noticed that my shadow was in the picture and I decided it was a keeper.

arizona2024 — Interesting sandstone patterns. Small fins as hard as rock.

arizona2024 — An old tree in the sand.

arizona2024 — Pillow rocks like the ones I saw in White Pocket which is not very far from Coyote Buttes.

arizona2024 — As the sun set the rocks turned more yellow.

We continued to the car and headed back to Kanab talking about the big hike tomorrow to the Wave.
