Photographing Penguins in Antarctica

Monday, 19 January 2026 - Arrival at Iguazú included an aerial view of the falls and the Argentina/Brazil border, followed by an afternoon exploring the Upper and Lower Trails from the Argentine side. The day focused on multiple major waterfalls, shifting viewpoints, mist and rainbows, and brief wildlife sightings, concluding with sunset views of the Brazilian-side falls from the hotel.

A travel day to Iguazú Falls on the northern border with Brazil and very near Paraguay.

As we flew into Iguazú the pilot did a very magnanimous maneuver, flying past Iguazú Falls for those on the left side of the plane and then turning to allow the right side a full view.

A few points which I did not know when I took the picture. You can see the Iguazú River very broad as it approaches the falls, then a very narrow canyon as it leaves.

Argentina is on the right and Brazil on the left. The building in the jungle is a 5-star hotel on the Brazilian side of the falls.

The building on the right (Argentinian side) is my hotel.

I arrived at the hotel and immediately unpacked the cameras and headed out on the trails along the falls. There are three trails, two of which are near the hotel.

I decided to take the Upper Trail first. My first view of the falls.

There are many falls - not a contiguous waterfall. Depending on the water level, it can vary between 160 and 250 falls some guide books said 280 falls.

You could spend a lot of time at each viewpoint documenting the various falls.

San Martín Falls - named for the military hero of Argentina.

More and more waterfalls.

Every turn in the trail had a new view of the falls.

Above Bossetti Falls, one of the major falls. Hard to get a great picture of a waterfall while walking on top. The water volume is so great that there is a constant mist at many of the falls. This creates rainbows on sunny days.

A better angle of the rainbow.

Getting closer to San Martín falls.

San Martín falls water then hits a second level falls through a narrow chute. They do not name the secondary level falls, so it must be part of San Martín.

A small waterfall.

I was hurrying back to the lower falls and was stopped by an Argentine Black and White tegu. It is the largest of the tegu lizards, with males typically growing up to 4 feet long.

The Two Sisters falls on the Lower Trail.

Technically the park was closing, so I began the Lower Trail backwards to avoid the park rangers.

It was while taking this picture that the park rangers swept me up as they pushed the crowds out of the park.

Another quick picture of the Two Sisters falls.

The falls on the Brazilian side from my hotel - Floriano Falls

As I ate dinner outside on the deck at the BBQ restaurant the sun was setting. I took leave of the table to climb to the second floor to take this picture of Floriano Falls.

My first day at the falls and I logged 5 miles on the various trails.
