Photographing Penguins in Antarctica

Monday, 29 December 2025 - Morning was spent exploring Ushuaia and its surrounding Tierra del Fuego landscape, including views of the city, harbor, and local wildlife. In the afternoon, the ship departed along the Beagle Channel toward the Atlantic Ocean, with sightings of seabirds, distant penguin colonies, and dusky dolphins during the evening sail.

The ship did not board until 1500, so we had some time to walk around Ushuaia in the morning.

From the other side of the hotel you can look into the city of Ushuaia.

The port is to the right, there are so many cruise ships that two have to wait their turn anchored in the bay. The snow-capped mountains in the distance are in Chile.

There are over 100,00 living in Ushuaia at the bottom of the world.

Lupines are growing everywhere, common in gardens they are also growing wild all over the city.

Salmon farms are not very popular. Late in 2025 the government narrowly voted to reverse a ban on the practice of inviting environmental protests. On the ship we would learn why Salmon farming is harmful.

Pollution from salmon, feces, and antibiotics will destroy native biodiversity and harm the lucrative, local, shellfish industry. Chile has had notorious environmental damage with the same farms.

Aboard MS Seaventure we started the cruise sailing the Beagle Channel headed to the Atlantic ocean.

The mountains on the Argentine side followed us.

Unlike the trip yesterday we do not get close to the small islands to see the Sea Lions, but we did see little dots of penguins on Isla Martillo.

As the sun set we spotted some Dusky dolphins and were fortunate to see them jump.
