Vacation in Central Italy

Tuesday, 30 May 2006 - Traveled from Lake Como to Venice by train, and arrived in the afternoon. Cruised through the canals on a water bus past the Grand Canal and Rialto Bridge took in the incredible water-city atmosphere, and had dinner overlooking the lagoon. Ended the evening with a concert at Church of San Vidal featuring an ensemble performing Haydn, Bach, and Vivaldi, a beautiful first night in Venice.

italy2006 — High above Menagglo sits a house. We are not sure how to get up the drive as there seems to be no road.

italy2006 — As we made way across the lake we docked at Varenna for the train to Venice. At the top of the hill over the town is the Vezio castle barely visible at the top. Virginia Ann and Cal climbed that hill to the top to visit the castle.

italy2006 — In the train yard was a garden so Cal took time to use his macro lens on the flowers.

italy2006 — We arrived in Venice in the afternoon and took a water bus from the train station. The taxi took us along the Gran Canal. The view was amazing water everywhere. The ability for the town to exist without any motorized transportation is unbelievable.

italy2006 — We went under the Rialto Bridge on our way - very impressive and hard to get a clear view on a crowded bus.

The Rialto Bridge is made of two shop lines surrounded by stairs sustained by doric columns. The foundation was started in 1588, and it took several years to finally join the opposite part of the Gran Canal and substitute the previous wood bridge that had collapsed many times.

italy2006 — Dinner was on the lagoon side of the city looking across at the Church of Redentorer.

italy2006 — Looking up the Gran Canal at Church of Madonna Della Salute. This church is at the end of the Gran Canal where it meets the lagoon.

This picture is off the Accademia Bridge that was close to the hotel. As only one of three bridges the ability to look up the canal was great - except we crossed it all the time and each time Cal had to take several pictures.

italy2006 — The first evening in Venice we decided to go to a concert at a nearby church - Church of San Vidal. The concert was by the Interpreti Veneziani they are a string ensemble and were excellent. Haydn, Bach, and Vivaldi reverberated off the church walls.

italy2006 — Outside the church was a small canal - like an alley. This was hard to take with the camera handheld.

italy2006 — Our hotel in Venice was great. A real treat. It was tough to find a hotel in Venice and the name of this hotel was not very romantic - Hotel American.

As you can see with these pictures it was a great location and the room was very nice. I would highly recommend staying at the Hotel American.
