Journey Across France

Tuesday, 27 April 1999 - Most of the day was spent on the road driving from the Loire Valley to the French coast with a long stop at Mont-Saint-Michel exploring the remarkable island abbey and its medieval ramparts. Learned about the Benedictine monastery's long construction history, wandered the grounds, and took in the dramatic sea views despite a camera film mishap.

Most of this day was spent on the bus driving from the Loire Valley to the French coast. We stopped at Mount Saint Michel for several hours - it was here that Cal discovered that for the last 36 hours the film in the camera was not advancing.

Mont-Saint-Michel was dedicated to Saint Michael in 708. St Michael had three tasks - he weighed souls to separate them into the elect and the dammed, he leads them to heaven protecting them from demons, and lastly he guarded the gates of paradise. In 966, it was entrusted to the Benedictine monks who made the island one of the most important places of pilgrimage in the Christian world. The monks began a construction project that continued without interruption from the year 1000 to the beginning of the 1500s.
