Two Days in Delhi

Tuesday, 20 November 2018 - Another very hot day began with a visit to the Tomb of Safdar Jang, admiring its ornate mausoleum and garden design, then drove into Old Delhi for a long four-hour walk through lively street markets, book and bird stalls, spice vendors, and bustling neighborhoods, climbed up to a rooftop with young kite flyers, soaked up local life and architecture, and ended the day back at the hotel for dinner after exploring the chaotic city streets.

Today we started a little later in the day - it was still very hot.

The first stop was the Tomb of Safdar Jang built in 1754. Safdarjung was made prime minister of the Mughal Empire (Wazir ul-Mamlak-i-Hindustan) when Ahmed Shah Bahadur ascended the throne in 1748.

The four minarets at the four corners are part of the main mausoleum which was totally a different concept in elevation compared to the Taj Mahal where the towers are detached and away from the facade of the tomb.

Too bad there is no water in the water feature. There are four of these water features - on each side.

The Safdarjung tomb, the last monumental tomb garden of the Mughals, was planned and built like an enclosed garden tomb in line with the style of the Humayun tomb. It was completed in 1754. The slabs from the tomb of Abdul Rahim Khankhana were used in the construction of the tomb.

We then drove to Old Delhi and began a walk which would last 4 hours. It was Sunday so many of the markets were closed but there were lively street markets on sidewalks.

There was avery large book market many blocks long. They were selling books by the pound.

Vikram then took me to the top of a building - which used to be a huge palace building. Now filled with apartments. On top of the building were several young men flying kites.

Back to the hotel for dinner - it was much better than Saturday but still a long hot day.
